A young man of ethnic Caucasus origin has been shot dead in Moscow an hour before he was supposed to be tried in court for a racially motivated attack.
He was one of seven men, allegedly members of a gang dubbed the Black Hawks, accused of a xenophobic assault on two Russians in the Moscow metro last year.

That random knife attack on two students on the Moscow metro has led to claims Russia has its own version of the Black Panthers the notorious gang that fought for black power in the U.S in the 60s.

The lawyer of the group on trial maintains that last year’s crime had nothing to do with race.

I can assure you, that the youths we’re protecting have absolutely nothing to do with this nationalistic group. I call it a myth, which has no confirmation, said lawyer Aga Manafov.

While Thursday’s shooting has many talking of revenge, some say more sinister motives are afoot.

I believe that an organized criminal group was operating in Moscow and that it was funded by some other countries secret services, says Sergey Stashevsky from the First Moscow Lawyers Collegium.

No matter who is responsible, it will do little to calm fears that racially motivated attacks are out of control in Russia. The usual victims are nationals from former Soviet republics and Asian or African foreigners.

In this year alone 42 people have been killed and more than 200 injured in neo-Nazi or racist violence, according to Moscow human rights group Sova.

While the number is down by nearly a half compared to the same time as last year, the concern now is Thursday’s shooting could trigger a dangerous chain reaction.

This is a war, and the aggression will be rising from both sides. I hope that ethnic organizations will try to control the youngsters, at least some of them, said Sova representative Galina Kozhevnikova.

Combating racial hate crimes has become a state priority, but with Thursdays shooting of the defendant, the government will have to do more to make sure cases are settled in court, and not on the streets.

Eduard Chuvashov, who conducted a number of high-profile trials of ultra-nationalists, has been gunned down in the center of Moscow as he was leaving his apartment.

The judge worked for the Moscow city court and specialized in especially serious crimes, including hate crimes. Chuvashov was many times threatened by the members of nationalistic groups, who used their websites to call on followers to kill the judge.

The involvement of nationalistic groups is being viewed as one of the main avenues of inquiry for the investigation, reports Interfax with reference to a source in Moscow law-enforcement body.

This February, Chuvashov sentenced members of the White Wolves nationalistic group to prison terms. Nine people were found guilty of 11 murderers, mostly of citizens of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The nationalists were sentenced to between 6.5 and 23 years in prison.

Chuvashov conducted the trial of a nationalistic group headed by Artur Ryno and Pavel Skachevsky. In early April, the leaders of the gang were sentenced to 10 years each in prison. The court took into consideration that Ryno and Skachevsky were underage at the time they committed the crimes.

For the last four years judges have been killed each year due to court cases they presided over. Thats according to the Judicial Department under the Supreme Court of Russia, as ITAR-TASS news agency reports. Unfortunately, cases of criminal infringement on the lives of acting judges, retired judges, and members of their families are not isolated. In 2006-2009 10 judges were killed; in 2006 2 were killed; in 2007 4; in 2008 1; in 2009 3. Moreover, in 2007, 2008 and 2009 there was one murder each year connected to cases being heard by judges, according to the Judicial Department.

Last year, Stanislav Markelov, a lawyer who participated in the trial over a Russian colonel who killed a Chechen girl, was murdered in the center of Moscow in broad daylight. People who have been charged with the murder have links in Russian nationalist groups. The murder came shortly after the accused, Colonel Budanov, who was sentenced to 10 years in prison, was released on parole.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev promised on Monday to make all efforts to find and punish those responsible for killing federal judge Eduard Chuvashov.

“Everything that is necessary will be done so that the organizers and performers of this cynical killing are found and punished,” Dmitry Medvedev stated in a message to the chief of the Moscow City Court, Olga Egorova.

Galina Kozhevnikova, deputy director of the information-analytical center SOVA for problems of nationalism and xenophobia, says that in recent months Chuvashov was working on well-known cases of neo-Nazi groups.

Chuvashov was a completely sympathetic judge and we didn’t have any procedural claims and nothing that could have signaled that such a tragedy would happen, and this is very important, as there could be versions which connect it with our clients, he added. But I am absolutely sure our clients had nothing to do with it. Why it is still being connected? It’s easy not to run far. But nevertheless I haven’t heard any official versions. Nowadays it’s easy to post whatever you like on the Internet.

Though we cant say for sure, its not ruled out that these ultra-nationalists or fascist groups are trying to send a message to the authorities, because the authorities are now taking a harder line with these kinds of race killings, says Tim Wall, editor-in-chief for the Moscow News newspaper.
